Cultural notes

Otayama Shrine is said to be associated with the Tachibana clan, a powerful and influential family in Hokkaido. The shrine is also famous for its unique 'sokushinbutsu,' or 'mummified corpses,' which are believed to have been placed on the shrine grounds as offerings.

Founded in 1760 by a local farmer who claimed to have received a vision from the kami.
