The shrine's name, 'Nanasugi,' refers to its striking cedar tree with 28 branches, said to resemble the eight districts of Shimojishiro town. Cultural notes
Oshima Nanasugi Jinja is connected to the legend of Inari Okami, who was said to have traveled from Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture to Shimojishiro town to bring prosperity and good fortune. The shrine also hosts a biennial Festival of Blessings (Seiryu-shiki), which takes place on November 17th, where devotees offer prayers and food for the god's protection.
