Ontake Shrine, located in the heart of Saitama Prefecture, is a tranquil Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami (spirits) of Mount Ontake, a prominent active volcano in central Japan. The shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period, with a large torii gate and a traditional Honden hall, while its grounds are adorned with beautiful autumn foliage. Despite its serene atmosphere, visitors can still feel the spiritual energy emanating from the nearby mountain.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
Ontake Shrine is said to be the location where Hachiman Okami-no-Mikoto, the Shinto god of war, was revered. The shrine also hosts a traditional summer festival, called Ontake Matsuri, which features taiko drum performances and traditional dances.
Historical note
Ontake Shrine was originally established in the Kamakura period as Ontake Hachiman-gu, serving as a Shinto shrine for the imperial family during their summer retreats at nearby Nikko.
