Kumano Shrine

Kumano Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Tanabe, Wakayama Prefecture, not Nagano. It is one of the most sacred shrines in Japan and a major pilgrimage site for the Kumano Kodo, an ancient trail that spans over 400 miles. The shrine complex includes several smaller shrines dedicated to various kami, including the prominent Okuninushi, the god of harvest and fertility.

Visitor tip

For a unique experience, visit Kumano Shrine during the Omisoka festival on December 31st, when visitors write prayers on paper lanterns to be released into the sea.

Cultural notes

Kumano Shrine is deeply connected to the mythology of the Kumano region. According to legend, Okuninushi was said to have been born from a mountain stone and is revered as the bringer of spring rain and fertility. The shrine's complex architecture reflects its importance in Shinto rituals and ceremonies.

Historical note

The current main hall was built in 1317 during the Muromachi period.
