Kumano Shrine

Located in Shizuoka Prefecture, Kumano Shrine is a sacred site in Japan's Kumano region, revered for its association with the legendary Kumano deity and the mythological route of Kumano Sanzan. As one of Japan's oldest shrines, it is believed to have been founded during the 7th century. The shrine complex features several wooden structures, including the iconic Kumano Taisha main hall, which dates back to the 16th century.

Cultural notes

As part of Kumano Sanzan, the shrine is connected to other two major sites: Koya-san (on the island of Shikoku) and Yoshino-kyo. According to Shinto mythology, these sites were visited by the god Susanowo during his journey from the sea goddess Amaterasu's heavenly realm.

Kumano Shrine was originally constructed in 744 AD and rebuilt several times throughout its history.
