Cultural notes
Sanzan, enshrined at Kumano Jinja, include: Yakamochi ( patron deity of learning and poetry), Okuninushi (goddess of harvests and fertility), and Susanoo-no-Mikoto (storm god). The shrine also celebrates the Kishimichi festival, held every 10 years, which honors the spirits of the Kumano region's ancestors.
Historical note
Kumano Jinja has been rebuilt several times, but its origins date back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE).
