Cultural notes
Kasuga Jinja is famous for its striking vermilion gates (sanya) and its association with the legend of Kusunoki Matsuraji, a samurai who died during a battle in 1189. The shrine also hosts a traditional festival called Yoroshi no Matsuri, which honors the arrival of spring.
Historical note
The shrine was established during the Edo period (1603-1867 CE), initially as a minor shrine to Amaterasu Okami.
