Kashima Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture, on the island of Kashima-jima. Dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami, it is one of Japan's most famous and historic shrines, dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine complex features a unique yagurō design, with five stories of interconnected wooden buildings, and is renowned for its vermilion-hued gates. Kashima Shrine has been an important center for pilgrims traveling between Nikko and Tokyo.

Cultural notes
Kashima Shrine is famous for its sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami worship. During the spring equinox festival (Shunbun no Hi), thousands of visitors gather on Kashima-jima to pray for good health, happiness, and peace. Additionally, the shrine is said to be a sacred site where the legendary sea god Ryujin resides.
