Cultural notes

Kamo Jinja is closely tied to the local legend of the River Shinwa-no-Tsurugi, said to have been given to the god Kamoshi no Mikoto by Amaterasu herself. Each year, on May 15th, the shrine hosts a lively festival celebrating the arrival of spring and the River Shinwa-no-Tsurugi.

Historical note

Founded in 718 AD by Emperor Shōmu during the Nara period, making it one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines.
