Visitor tip

To avoid lines at the main shrine, consider visiting early in the morning or later in the afternoon when they are less crowded.

Cultural notes

Inari Daimyojin is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that form a tunnel leading to the inner sanctum. The shrine is also associated with the legend of Fox Spirits (Kitsune), said to be messengers of Inari Okami. During the autumnal festival, Tenjin Matsuri, visitors can participate in traditional dances and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 718 CE by Emperor Shōmu and has undergone numerous restorations throughout its history.
