To experience the authentic atmosphere, enter through the Kaminarimon gate and walk down Nakamise shopping street before entering Senso-ji temple.
Cultural notes
Asakusa Shrine is closely tied to Japanese education and learning. According to legend, Sugawara no Michizane appeared to a young apprentice in Asuka and instructed him on the importance of learning. To this day, students and scholars visit the shrine seeking blessings for academic success.

The shrine was originally founded in 645 CE during the Asuka period as a memorial for Sugawara no Michizane's life.
