The tale of Nikusui

In the depths of rural Awa, where cypress trees pierced the moonlit sky and mist veiled the villages, there lived a young traveler named Kaito. He was a weary soul, seeking respite from the world's troubles in the stillness of the countryside. One autumn evening, as he wandered through the forest, a faint scent of cherry blossoms wafted on the breeze, beckoning him towards a tranquil clearing.

In the center of the glade stood a woman, her beauty so radiant it seemed to emanate from the very heart of the trees. Her skin shone like the moon's reflected glow on rippling water, and her dark tresses cascaded down her back like a waterfall of night. Kaito felt his feet move towards her as if drawn by an unseen force.

"Welcome, traveler," she said in a voice that was at once soothing and unsettling. "I have been waiting for you. My name is Sakura, and I have lived here in these woods for centuries."

Kaito's thoughts grew muddled as he gazed into her eyes, dark pools of mystery that seemed to hold secrets he couldn't quite grasp. He forgot his fatigue, his hunger, and even the ache in his heart. All that mattered was being near this enigmatic woman.

As they walked together, Sakura pointed out hidden streams and secret meadows, sharing tales of ancient magic and forgotten lore. Kaito listened with rapt attention, feeling the world's cares slipping away like autumn leaves on a gusty wind.

But as night deepened, and the stars twinkled above like ice chips in the black sky, a faint shiver ran down Kaito's spine. Sakura's smile seemed to grow wider, her eyes gleaming with an unholy light. The air around them began to chill, and he caught a whiff of something metallic on the breeze – a scent that sent shivers coursing through his veins.

Suddenly, the woman's form began to twist, like a reflection in rippling water that distorts into a grotesque visage. Her skin turned sallow, her eyes burning with an otherworldly hunger. Kaito stumbled backward as Sakura's monstrous shape coalesced before him – her body now a twisted mass of scaly flesh and bulging organs.

In a voice that was no longer human, she purred: "You are mine now, traveler. Your essence shall feed the Nikusui's eternal hunger." The words were like a cold wind on Kaito's soul, freezing his very being.

When the villagers found him the next morning, he lay as a hollow skeleton, his eyes sunken, his skin gray and lifeless. They whispered among themselves of the mysterious woman in white, the one who had lured their brother to his doom. And though they never spoke her name aloud, they knew that Sakura was the Nikusui – a creature feared by all who dwelled in those haunted woods.

From that day on, travelers avoided the Awa countryside at night, lest they cross paths with the seductive monster, whose hunger for human essence would consume them whole.
