Yoshino Hachiman Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Fukushima-cho, Hokkaido's northernmost city of Otaru, but actually located in Fukushima-machi, on the eastern coast of Hokkaido, near the town of Otofuke. The shrine was built to enshrine the spirits of Japanese soldiers who died during World War II. It is one of only a few Shinto shrines in Japan that honors war dead, and its history reflects the country's complex relationship with its military past.
