The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture. According to legend, the shrine was built by Emperor Jimmu, who is said to have founded Japan's imperial line. The shrine has been an important center for rituals and ceremonies in honor of Amaterasu, the Shinto sun goddess.
