Akita

Indra Shrine in Akita is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, built in 718 AD during the Nara period. Dedicated to the storm god Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the shrine has been continuously inhabited by kami since then, with Inari Okami and other regional deities also enshrined. The complex features beautiful gardens, a large torii gate, and a majestic hall dedicated to Susanoo.

参拝のヒント

For those visiting during cherry blossom season (late April to early May), it's best to arrive early as the trees attract many visitors; consider arriving before sunrise or right after opening time to avoid crowds.

文化的背景

Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the primary kami enshrined here, is a powerful storm god who often clashes with Inari Okami. Locals celebrate Susanoo's annual festival in December with rituals and offerings to honor his patronage of agriculture.
