金刀毘羅神社

Kinjōdaibutsu-jinja is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Aomori, but was originally from Akita Prefecture. The shrine is famous for its Kinjōdaibutsu, a large wooden statue of Fujin, the god of wind and thunder, with one hand holding a sword and the other holding an axe. This unique statue is said to have been donated by a samurai in the 17th century.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the Kinjōdaibutsu, consider visiting during the spring cherry blossom season or autumn foliage, when the statue is illuminated and surrounded by vibrant autumn colors.

Cultural notes

The shrine is connected to the mythology of Fujin, who was said to have been a powerful wind god with control over the weather. In Japanese folklore, Fujin was also known for his mischievous nature and ability to play tricks on humans. The Kinjōdaibutsu statue is often seen as a symbol of protection against storms and bad weather.

Historical note

The shrine was relocated from Akita to Aomori in 1869.
