Akita

Located in the city of Yuzawa, Akita Prefecture, Shibushi Shrine is dedicated to Shinto Kami, and is famous for its association with the legendary 'Shibushi no Okinu', a benevolent spirit who was said to have been an official in the court of the late Heian period. The shrine's current structure dates back to the 17th century, but it has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries.

Visitor tip

To experience the spirit of Shibushi Shrine, try a traditional Yuzawa-style hot spring soak after visiting the shrine, and then enjoy a local specialty dish called 'Yuzawa-gaeshi', which is said to bring good luck.

Cultural notes

Shibushi Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Akita Prefecture, and its association with Okinu is unique among Shinto shrines. Visitors can also attend traditional festivals held at the shrine throughout the year, including the 'Yuzawa-Obon' festival in August.
