Visitor tip

Cultural notes
While primarily Buddhist, Eighty-eight Shrines Shrine also enshrines several Shinto kami, including the eight gods of fortune known as Hachiman-ji, Jurokujin, or the Forty-Eight Heroes. Local residents often visit the shrine to seek protection and good fortune.
Historical note
The origins of Eighty-eight Shrines Shrine date back to the Edo period (1603-1867), with a rebuilt main hall constructed in 1874 after the original was destroyed during the Bakumatsu period.
