The Raigendō Shrine in Tochigi Prefecture is dedicated to Raijin, the Shinto god of thunder and lightning. Located near the Irohazaka Pass, the shrine's architecture reflects its strategic importance as a military route between the provinces of Akita and Ibaraki. The shrine's wooden gate and torii are adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from mythology.

Visitor tip

To experience the shrine's unique atmosphere, visit during the annual Lightning Festival (Kami no Matsuri) in June, when thunderstorms are intentionally induced to bring good luck and prosperity.

As Raijin is revered as a protective deity, visitors often pray for safety and success. The shrine's grounds also feature a stunning cedar tree believed to be over 1,000 years old, said to have been planted by the kami themselves.

The Raigendō Shrine was established in the Edo period (1603-1867) to honor Raijin, who was believed to have protected the region from natural disasters.
