Cultural notes

As one of Japan's oldest and most influential Shinto shrines, Fujisan Okunoin Shrine has played host to numerous festivals throughout its history, including the annual Hakone Highland Festival. The shrine is also famous for its unique 'forest of the dead' (Okunoin), where thousands of wooden coffins are placed in rows, creating a hauntingly beautiful and spiritual landscape.

Historical note

Established during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), Fujisan Okunoin Shrine was originally built to honor a local samurai lord, but over time evolved into a major Shinto pilgrimage site.
