熊野神社

Shizuoka

Kōno Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the worship of Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice and fertility. Located in Katsuragi-ku, it is particularly famous for its large population of vermillion torii gates that have been erected over time, forming a tunnel leading up to the main hall. The shrine attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to pray for good luck, prosperity, and protection.

Visitor tip

To avoid long lines at Kōno Shrine, consider visiting early in the morning or late in the evening when crowds are generally smaller.

Cultural notes

Kōno Shrine is also famous for its large number of fox spirits (Kitsune) that have been enshrined here. According to legend, a fox spirit appeared at the shrine and was worshipped as Inari Okami's divine messenger. Today, visitors can see statues of foxes throughout the shrine grounds.

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded in the 7th century AD during the Asuka period, making it one of Japan's oldest shrines.
