Hachiman Tenjin, the primary kami enshrined at Eighteen Stage Shrine, is believed to be the god of the sea, storms, and war. According to legend, Hachiman was a samurai who helped Emperor Kinmei defeat the Korean king Sejong. The shrine's main hall features a distinctive red-lacquered torii gate and a large wooden statue of Tenjin.
