浅間神社

Ibaraki

Located in the picturesque town of Kaihinamisaki, Asukawa Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Kannon (also known as Senaka-no-Okami), the goddess of mercy and childbirth, and Tsunekichi, a local kami associated with fishing. The shrine's name 'Asukawa' literally translates to 'place where the gods weep'. This name may be derived from the legend of a samurai who wept at the beauty of the surrounding landscape, earning him a place in the afterlife.

Cultural notes

Asukawa Shrine is known for its unique 'weeping god' statue, said to be inspired by the legend. During the Cherry Blossom Viewing Festival in spring, visitors can participate in a ritual where they take turns weeping at the beauty of the landscape to honor Tsunekichi and Kannon.
