多賀神社 (Toga Shrine) is a Shinto shrine located in the heart of Takamatsu, the capital city of Kagawa Prefecture. As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, it dates back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). The shrine is dedicated to the god of the sea and fertility, Toga-no-okami. Visitors can admire the beautiful gardens, traditional architecture, and sacred trees surrounding the shrine. The shrine's main hall, Tocho-den, features a striking tile roof and a beautiful garden with a large stone lantern.

Visitor tip
For visitors looking to make an offering, please use the designated 'omamori' (lucky charm) stalls located at the entrance of the shrine. Take a few minutes to stroll through the serene gardens and admire the beautiful cherry blossoms during spring.
Cultural notes
Toga-no-okami is also associated with the protection of fishermen and sailors. The shrine's festival, 'Toga Matsuri', is celebrated in late April to promote safe navigation for fishing boats. Visitors can also see the unique 'torii' gate at the entrance of the shrine, which features a stunning tile roof.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 743 CE by Emperor Shōmu as part of the temple complex of Ben'en-ji Temple.
