厳島神社

Ibaraki

厳島神社 is one of Japan's most sacred shrines, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and the sea god Susanoo. Located in Ibaraki Prefecture, the shrine's architecture reflects the Heian period's (794-1185 CE) influence on Shinto temples. Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall, which features a traditional tatami mat floor and a sacred lantern called an 'akai-tō' lit during festivals.

Cultural notes

厳島神社 is famous for its association with Susanoo, the storm god who fought his brother Kinu-no-Mikoto. According to legend, Susanoo hid in the shrine's nearby lake, called 'Kamiyamato', after a dispute with the gods.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1558 by the Ibaraki clan.
