金蛇弁財天

Miyagi

Located in the prefecture of Miyagi, Kinsei Benkai Ten is a Shinto shrine dedicated to various kami, including Ryujin and Hachiman. The shrine's architecture reflects the typical style of a Japanese temple, with a wooden gate, torii gate, and a main hall. However, its unique history dates back to the 17th century when it was established as a treasure house for gold and silver. Visitors can try their luck at the shrine's famous 'snake-shaped gate' (kinsei) and make a wish while throwing a coin into one of the many small shrines along the path leading up to the main gate.

Cultural notes

As a treasure house, Kinsei Benkai Ten has connections to the mythology of Ryujin, the dragon god, who is said to have brought gold and silver to Japan. The shrine also celebrates the annual 'Kappa Festival' in July, where participants dress up as the mischievous kappa water spirits and perform traditional dances.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 1651 by the Miyagi Domain, which stored valuable treasures including gold and silver within its grounds.
