Nakasendo-ike, a historic road in the Edo period, runs along the southern edge of Nasu City, where the Inari Okappuru Festival is held annually to commemorate the 3,000 Inari gods who accompanied the travelers along this route. The Nakasendo Road led to the shrine, which was built to honor these Inari gods and has been a major Shinto site since its foundation in 750 AD.

Visitor tip
Bring an offering of rice or sweets for the Inari gods as you approach the torii gate.
Cultural notes
Nasu Inari Shrine is famous for its numerous vermilion torii gates, which are said to be the favorite of the god Inari Okappuru. The shrine also holds the annual Inari Festival in July to honor the 3,000 Inari gods who accompanied travelers along the Nakasendo Road.
