Cultural notes
Ryūgū-jinja Shrine is closely associated with the legend of the dragon god Ryūgū, who was said to have ruled over Lake Biwa. The shrine also hosts a festival in May to celebrate the beginning of summer, known as Naginata-sai, where visitors can watch traditional performances and try local food.
Historical note
The shrine was originally founded in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), but its current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867 CE).
