Located in the city of Hikone, Omi-dera Taisha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of prosperity and good fortune, Shizuka-hime no Kami. This shrine was originally built as a temple during the Heian period but later converted to a Shinto shrine in 1869. The shrine's main hall features a unique thatched roof and beautiful gardens along the Katsura River.

Visitor tip
To experience the best of Omi-dera Taisha, visit during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April) when the surrounding gardens are particularly beautiful.
Cultural notes
As one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, Omi-dera Taisha is associated with several important deities, including Shizuka-hime no Kami and the god of the Katsura River. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful festivals, including the Hikone Matsuri festival, which takes place in May.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1857.
