Ebi-no-Suse-san Shrine, located in the city of Aishimagun, Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, is one of Japan's oldest shrines, with a history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). The shrine is dedicated to Ebi no Suse-hime, a legendary woman who was said to have been born in 800 and died at the age of 17. According to myth, she was an exceptional beauty and a fierce warrior, and her spirit is believed to reside in the shrine.

Visitor tip
To make the most of your visit, be sure to try some of the local special sweets, such as manju and daifuku, which are offered for sale at the shrine's food stalls.
Cultural notes
Ebi no Suse-hime is often associated with fertility and childbirth, making her a popular deity among women. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in July to celebrate the legendary woman's life and spirit.
