Cultural notes
This shrine is one of the few Shinto shrines where the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto is enshrined alongside Amaterasu, both being gods of storms and fertility. The shrine's annual festival also marks an important ritual to cleanse the imperial regalia, passed down from the sun goddess Amaterasu.
Historical note
The current main shrine was built in 927 CE during the Heian period.
