Ise Grand Shrine is one of Japan's most revered Shinto shrines, dedicated to the god Susanoo-no-Mikoto. Located on the coast of Shiga Prefecture, it has played a significant role in Japanese history and culture. The shrine complex includes numerous smaller shrines and temples, showcasing various architectural styles that reflect different historical periods. Ise Grand Shrine is also famous for its annual Festival of Spring (Matsuri), where participants wear traditional costumes, and the sacred ritual to cleanse the imperial regalia.

Cultural notes

This shrine is one of the few Shinto shrines where the deity Susanoo-no-Mikoto is enshrined alongside Amaterasu, both being gods of storms and fertility. The shrine's annual festival also marks an important ritual to cleanse the imperial regalia, passed down from the sun goddess Amaterasu.

Historical note

The current main shrine was built in 927 CE during the Heian period.
