日枝神社

Ibaraki

Located in the town of Okatsura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Dayo Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and the god of agriculture, Kanezo. The shrine's main hall was built during the Edo period, and its distinctive thatched roof and large stone torii gate are notable features of its architecture. As one of the oldest shrines in Ibaraki Prefecture, Dayo Shrine is also home to a number of regional deities and kami, including the god of rice, rice goddess, and god of fertility.

To make the most of your visit, try some local specialties such as Miharu miso or Okatsura apples at one of the food stalls near the entrance.

Cultural notes

Dayo Shrine is closely tied to the region's rice culture and agricultural traditions. The shrine's annual Autumn Festival (Koyo) features traditional dances, music, and offerings to the kami, as well as a grand parade through the town streets.

The shrine was founded during the Kamakura period (1185-1333).
