Kyuho-ji Temple's associated Shinto shrine, Heike Shrine is located in the Kamakura region of Kanagawa Prefecture. In contrast,熊野神社 (Kuma no okami) in Miyagi Prefecture is dedicated to a kami known as Kuma no okami, or 'Bear Spirit', however it is more likely a Shinto shrine for the bear and mountain spirits which may have been associated with the region. The name Kuma implies the presence of bears, but also possibly other local animal spirits. The shrine is not directly linked to any specific Heian period legend or well-known historical event.
