Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the Big Dance Shrine's significance, consider visiting at dawn or dusk when the changing light of the setting sun enhances the beautiful vermilion torii gate.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its unique 'Big Dance' festival, which takes place during the spring and autumn equinoxes. The main event involves dancers performing a ritual dance in a large, ceremonial arena while dressed in traditional costumes adorned with sacred leaves and flowers. This ancient tradition is believed to ensure fertility and prosperity.

Historical note

The original shrine was destroyed by a fire in 1598 during the Sengoku period, leading to the current structure's design.
