八坂神社

Shiga

Located in the city of Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, Eighteen坂 Shrine is dedicated to Katsushika-no-kami, a kami associated with the city's founding and the confluence of the Katsura and Ayase rivers. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional Japanese style, with a main hall built in 1745 during the Edo period.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April) for stunning views of the blooming sakura trees along the Ayase River.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its annual 'Matsuri' festival, held in May, which features traditional performances and offerings to Katsushika-no-kami. According to legend, the kami's name was given by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a symbol of good luck and prosperity.
