八坂神社

Located in the Osaka Prefecture, Eight坂 Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the kami of protection and good fortune. The shrine's name is derived from its location on the eight hills (saka) that make up the Kiyotaki Valley. It is said to be one of the oldest shrines in Osaka, with evidence of its existence dating back to the Heian period. Over time, the shrine has undergone several renovations and expansions, including a major reconstruction during the Edo period.

Visitor tip

Visit the shrine during cherry blossom season ( late March to early April) for stunning views of the surrounding hills covered in blooming sakura trees.

Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its beautiful garden, which features a large maple tree said to be over 500 years old. It is also known for its traditional Japanese architecture and its association with the mythology of the Eight Hells, one of the 8 hells in Buddhist cosmology.

Historical note

It was originally founded as part of the Tosa Province's imperial cult.
