Cultural notes

Tenmangu Shrine is deeply connected to Japanese mythology and culture. The god Sugawara no Michizane is often depicted as a wise and benevolent deity who guides scholars and intellectuals. The shrine also hosts an annual festival, Tenjin Matsuri, in July, which honors the god's patronage of learning.

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded in 757 CE during the Nara period as Tenjin-ji, dedicated to the Chinese scholar Minamoto no Tamemochi. In 1873, it was renamed Tenmangu Shrine in honor of Sugawara no Michizane.
