The Tsuchi-no-Oki-tsume-katana-giri-miya shrine, located in the Seto Inland Sea region of Kagawa Prefecture, is dedicated to the sea goddess and protector of fishermen, Oki-kotobiki. The shrine's name translates to 'the mountain with a golden, treasured sword'. The complex features various architectural styles, including traditional Shinto temples and samurai-era structures. Visitor tip
To avoid long queues, visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not directly overhead.
Cultural notes
Oki-kotobuki is often invoked during the annual Omiyage Festival, where devotees bring gifts of fish and other seafood to the shrine. The complex also features a replica of a traditional Japanese sailboat and a wooden statue of Oki-kotobuki riding a giant catfish.
