Cultural notes

As a coastal shrine, Ryujin Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of water and fishing. The shrine's architecture features a unique 'michi no matsu' design, resembling a tree standing on the shore, which symbolizes the connection between land and sea. During the annual 'Gion Matsuri' festival in July, visitors can participate in traditional rituals to ensure a bountiful harvest.

Historical note

Founded during the Edo period (1603-1868) as part of the Tokugawa shogunate's efforts to establish Shinto shrines throughout Japan.
