Visitor tip

Visitors can purchase and tie strings of prayer tokens called 'emakimono' on a designated post outside the shrine's main gate, which is believed to grant wishes.

Cultural notes

As an important Shinto site, San-Suginu-miya Shrine plays host to the annual Hitachi Festival in September, which features traditional dances and games. The shrine also has ties to the legend of San-suginu-hime, a mythological queen who was said to have founded a nearby village.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 1584 by a local lord as a way to appease the goddess Inari for her protection against famine.
