本木北野神社

Ibaraki

Located in the town of Katsuura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Hieiryu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of thunder, Raijin. The shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture and stunning autumn foliage. Visitors can see the unique torii gate made of wood, as well as the large stone statue of Raijin in front of the main hall.

Visitor tip

To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the evening when it's less crowded.

Cultural notes

Hieiryu Shrine is closely associated with the myth of Raijin, who is said to reside in a cave on the nearby Katsurajima Island. The shrine also hosts an annual festival called Hie Matsuri, which features traditional dances and performances.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1614 after being destroyed during the Shimabara Rebellion.
