Cultural notes

Sanzaka Shrine is associated with the legend of a young woman who fell in love with a nobleman but was forced to end their relationship. The shrine's name, 'San' meaning three, refers to this tragic tale, while 'zaka', meaning slope or hill, symbolizes the journey of life.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1566 after a devastating fire destroyed the original structure.
