Tsuchi no Oka Shrine, dedicated to the god of the sea and storms, is a lesser-known Shinto site located in the city of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese design with a vermilion torii gate and tatami-roofed wooden buildings. Cultural notes

Tsuchi no Oka Shrine is said to be a sacred site for fishermen and sailors, who believe that the god Tsuchi no Oka grants safe passage and bountiful catches. During the spring festival, visitors can participate in traditional games and activities, such as sumo wrestling and tug-of-war.

Historical note

Founded in 1606 during the Edo period, the shrine was originally dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war, but later came under the protection of the sea god Tsuchi no Oka.
