Located in the picturesque village of Ryujin-cho, Eiheiji Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to two deities: Ryujin Okami (Dragon God) and Fujisan Okami (Mountain God). Dedicated to samurai, scholars, and other officials who served the imperial family, this shrine has been in existence since the 16th century. The shrine's architecture reflects its rural setting with a simple yet elegant design featuring a large torii gate and traditional Shinto structures.

Visitor tip

For a truly immersive experience, visit during the annual Eiheiji Shrine Festival (April), where participants dress up as samurai and engage in traditional dances and performances.

Cultural notes

Eiheiji Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Ryujin Okami, who was said to have been defeated by a brave warrior. The shrine's main hall features a large wooden statue of Ryujin Okami, while Fujisan Okami is enshrined in a smaller shrine located nearby.
