The Shodo Tenno Shrine in Shiga Prefecture is dedicated to the imperial ancestors of Japan's emperor, particularly Emperor Seiwa, who ruled from 858 to 876. This shrine is situated near the former capital city of Nagaoka, which was an important center of politics and culture during the Heian period.

Cultural notes

The shrine is associated with Emperor Seiwa and is one of the Shinto shrines that enshrine kami from the imperial family. The Shodo Tenno Shrine also hosts an annual festival called 'O-fuda' or ' Imperial Spirit Festival', where visitors pray for good luck and prosperity.

Historical note

Founded in 860 as a temple dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Kanmu and his wife Empress Shoken, it was later converted into a Shinto shrine in 1869.
