Located in the scenic town of Nagahama, Eight-Horsemen Shrine is dedicated to the enshrined deity Benten, a Shinto kami associated with the sea and navigation. This shrine was originally built in the 17th century as a vermilion gate commemorating the defeat of the great warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu's enemy, the powerful daimyo, at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600.

Visitor tip
Visit during cherry blossom season (March-April) for stunning views of the surrounding landscape and enjoy the shrine's traditional sweets, such as wagashi, for a sweet treat.
Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine, it is customary to bow upon entering the grounds and to remove one's shoes before approaching the shrine. During special festivals, visitors can participate in traditional dances and music performances honoring Benten, known for her skill on the biwa, a traditional Japanese lute.
