泉神社

Shiga

located in the city of Echizen, Shiga Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the waterspout god and deity of rivers, lakes, and springs, Enma. The shrine is surrounded by a tranquil forested area and features a unique vermillion torii gate that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings. Visitors can explore the shrine's peaceful gardens and take a stroll along the nearby Katsura River.

Cultural notes

As a shrine associated with water and purification, Enma no Irohmaru is said to offer blessings for good health, prosperity, and safe passage. During the spring equinox (Shunbun no Hi), visitors may notice traditional ceremonies taking place to cleanse the waters and purify the mind.

Historical note

The shrine was originally founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE) as Enma no Irohmaru, making it one of the oldest shrines in Japan.
