Toyosato Inari Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Toyosato, Hikone city, Shiga prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the deity of rice and fertility, Inari Okami. Built in 1603 during the Edo period, it showcases traditional Japanese architecture with a distinctive houei gate. Visitors can explore the shrine's many torii gates and ornate wooden structures, as well as its tranquil gardens.

Visitor tip

To make an offering at the shrine, approach a torii gate and tie a colored string (preferably red) around it with a prayer, then proceed to the next gate for further offerings. This custom is believed to ensure good luck and prosperity.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's many Inari shrines, Toyosato Inari Shrine is connected to the mythology surrounding Inari Okami, who is said to have been a skilled rice goddess. During the spring equinox festival, visitors can participate in a ritual where they tie offerings and pray for good harvests.

Historical note

The shrine was relocated from its original location to its current site in 1695 during the Great Sendai Earthquake.
