Visitor tip
Visit the shrine's adjacent Odawara Castle Park for stunning views of the Tokyo Bay area, and try to catch one of the traditional 'Odawara Matsuri' festivals held annually in May.
Cultural notes
Honmokotsunomiya Shrine is famous for its unique 'rice paddy' torii gate, which is said to have been built using wooden pillars reclaimed from a nearby rice paddy. The shrine's grounds also feature several stone lanterns and shrines dedicated to the kami of agriculture and fertility.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1681 after a devastating earthquake destroyed the original structure.
