Located in the heart of Kamakura, Sugawara Inari Taisha is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines. The shrine complex is dedicated to the goddess of fertility and prosperity, Inari Okami, who is revered as a protector of rice fields and merchants. Visitors can walk through the beautiful gardens and admire the vibrant orange torii gates that line the path. At the center of the shrine stands a majestic vermilion gate, symbolizing the unity of heaven and earth.

Cultural notes

As an Inari shrine, Sugawara Taisha is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that are believed to be the manifestation of the goddess's presence. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May called 'Aoi Matsuri', where devotees offer prayers and blessings to ensure a bountiful harvest.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1333 during the Kamakura period by Sugawara no Michimori, a powerful samurai who served as a regent for the Shogun.
